In my 25 years of teaching I, like all teachers, have seen the increased stress students live with and try desperately to manage. This fact has created an even more impossible job for teachers--teach the curriculum to students who are overwhelmed. The stress of the teacher then, naturally has increased. With less and less support and respect from parents and administrators teachers feel overwhelmed which perpetuates the students' stress. When teachers are happy, supported, and respected they can be more effective in dealing with students who are forced to grow up in very stressful environments for a variety of reasons.
